Sonya Guerra, Director
Ms. Sonya Guerra is in her third year as choral director at Dickerson. Prior to her arrival here, Ms. Guerra was the choral director at Westside Middle School in Barrow County. Under her direction, the program nearly doubled in size, the select Westside Singers ensemble was created, and students had the opportunity to perform throughout the community and with both student and faculty instrumentalists. Ms. Guerra was also the music director and co-director of the Westside Theatre program, which brought in record audiences for its shows each year.
Ms. Guerra is a graduate of the James Madison University School of Music, located in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. She earned her Bachelors degree in Music Education, with voice as her instrument. Ms. Guerra is a member of NAfME and ACDA, and an alumna of Sigma Alpha Iota. She is co-organizer of the choral Large Group Performance Evaluation (LGPE) for Cobb County. Ms. Guerra is currently pursuing her Masters degree in Music Education at Florida State University. Go Noles!
Ms. Guerra was born in the great city of Chicago, and though she has moved a lot, she still considers the Windy City home. Ms. Guerra moved to Georgia in the summer of 2013, and she loves living in the South. Outside of her involvement with school choirs, Ms. Guerra has participated in select travel choirs, local honor and all-state choirs, solo performances, and a cappella quartets. It was actually Ms. Guerra’s own middle school chorus teacher who inspired her to follow the same path. Ms. Guerra was and still is involved in theatre, which has taken her to different states and even to London to perform. In her free time, Ms. Guerra likes doing anything outside, traveling, and exploring new coffee shops.
