Monday, March 16

ASSIGNMENT: Today we are going to learn how to use SIGHTREADINGFACTORY.COM as a tool to practice rhythm and sight-reading examples.

  1. Watch this video:
  2. Go to  http://www.sightreadingfactory.com/student
  3. Enter the following code: EMAIL MS. G for CODE
  4. Select your age group, and fill in remaining registration information.
  5. You must wait for Ms. Guerra to enter you into the Eighth Grade Chorus class. Once you see your 2 assignments (Sight-Reading #1 and Rhythm Reading #1) you may begin.
  6. Since this is our first time using this website, you have until TUESDAY 11:59PM to complete Sight-Reading #1 and Rhythm-Reading #1.
  7. TIPS (READ BEFORE YOU BEGIN)…
    • In the upper-right corner, click the tuning fork symbol for your starting pitch, and the metronome symbol which will play each half-beat (e.g. 1&2&3&) DON’T LOSE DO!
    • If you are ready early, you can click start, wait for the count-in, and then speak or sing.
  8. WHEN YOU CLICK START (READ BEFORE YOU BEGIN)…
    • Watch the count-in at the top of page carefully so you begin at the correct time
    • The vertical red line moving across the example is where you should be if you began at the correct time and you’re maintaining the correct steady tempo
    • The red line stops recording once it reaches the end of the example, so if you begin late or go too slow, it will cut you off!
    • YOU GET MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS! If you’re not happy with your first attempt, for today’s examples you get 2 additional attempts. Just be aware–a new attempt means a new example to practice.

Tuesday, March 17

HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY! It’s YOUTUBESDAY! If we were in class I’d show you one of my favorite Irish songs The Rattling Bog and we’d learn it, but I guess you’ll just have to Youtube it and watch it yourself!

Today’s assignment…..

Your task is to go online and find what you would consider a really great full-length video performance by a chorus. What type of chorus? Any! What genre of song? You pick! You will probably need to watch 30 seconds here and there of multiple performances before finding one that you would classify as an excellent performance.

Watch the entire performance. Now, think about what makes that group stand out to you. How old are the performers? Where are they from? Is it an auditioned group? How do they look in terms of posture, facial expressions, and engagement? How do they sound-think about what we work on in class. Dynamics, entrances, cut-offs, vowels, consonants, intonation (being in the bullseye).

Wednesday, March 18

ASSIGNMENT: Today you are working on memorization for Simple Gifts. Read the guidelines below and then click the link to access the accompaniment track and the sheet music.

 

DO NOT just lazily sing through the song one time and then be done.

DO sing with good Position 1 or 2 posture.

DO sing through the song once as a refresher, and then a second time where you work to improve one specific area from the different musical areas below.

DO have tall, cave-like, hooty vowels, as well as a spacious “mm” on verse 2 (remember that’s just treble voices).

DO sing with excellent consonants.

DO listen to the piano playing the parts and make sure you’re keeping a steady tempo.

DO listen to the piano playing the parts and listen louder than you sing! Are you matching the piano? Are you in the bullseye?

DO sing with the all the dynamics printed in the music and those we’ve worked on in class.

DO sing with correct phrasing, not breathing in the middle of a tied note.

–> If you have not completed Monday’s assignment yet, I extended the deadline to Friday at midnight to allow everyone to get used to  that site. I am posting feedback for each example as I listen to them so you know what to work on for next week, but you must complete both assignments to get feedback and get better! DO NOT just lazily mumble through the song one time and then be done. You practice with bad habits, you will perform with bad habits.

DO sing with good Position 1 or 2 posture.

DO sing through the song once as a refresher, and then a second time where you work to improve one specific area from the different musical areas below. Your practice should take 10-15 minutes.

DO have tall, cave-like, hooty vowels, including a tall [a] on “bound” 🙂

DO sing with excellent consonants.

DO listen to the accompaniment and make sure you’re keeping a steady tempo.

DO listen louder than you sing! Are you in tune with the piano? Are you in the bullseye?

DO sing with the all the dynamics printed in the music and those we’ve worked on in class.

DO sing with correct phrasing, not breathing in the middle of a tied note.

DO be extra aware of the tempo changes (including fermatas!) and quick to make adjustments in your own singing.
